Tony Berkel received his bachelor’s degree cum laude from the City University of New York at Hunter College in 1999. He did postgraduate work at New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He served as Director of Business and Professional Services at the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation in 2003.
He has also worked at various non-profit organizations. From 1999 to 2002, Mr. Berkel served as Project Director for the Bushwick Local Development Corporation, His leadership skills immediately placed him as one of the youngest minority executives at the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, as Director of Management and Operations for the Housing Department.
Mr. Berkel served in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1996. His tours included serving as Administrative Training Officer at the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and Diplomatic Officer at the United States Forces, Korea. At USFK, Mr. Berkel had the distinguished opportunity to provide diplomatic services to Korean Military and Government Officials as special assistant to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Army General Gary E. Luck. In recognition of his professionalism and dedication to service, he was one of the U.S. Navy’s youngest ranking officers to be nominated for the Distinguished Defense Meritorious Services Medal, a Presidential Level Service Award.
At Hunter College, Mr. Berkel’s academic record earned him various accolades. He was named the 1999 American Political Science Association Fellow in preparation for doctoral studies in the field of Political Science. He authored "Is the New York Assembly a Professional Institution?" which was sought out for joint publication by various professors.
Mr. Berkel served as Chairman of Economic Development for New York City’s Community Board #4 in Brooklyn from 2000 to 2005. He received various commendations and citations from the New York State Senate, New York State Assembly, and the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office.
His hobbies include Martial Arts, Cycling, Skiing, Acting and Fencing. He is married to Isabel Cristina Berkel a Realtor in New York and Florida.
