About me
Lake Worth, Florida, United States
**GORDON TOBUL’S BIOGRAPHY**
I was born in a small log cabin at a very early age in a galaxy far, far away---Well actually, I was born and raised in Painesville, Ohio where I did very well in school (Upper 5%), majoring in Fine Arts and winning awards for my artwork. After serving with the U.S.M.C. (Honorable Discharge in 1966 as a Sgt. E-5) I attended Lakeland Community College it’s first year (1st President of the Veteran’s Club and awarded the Most Outstanding Veteran) and transferred to Kent State University. With all the action of May 4th (I often tell people that I had get out of the Marine Corps and attend college to see combat!), I finally graduated with a GPA of 3.95 in my Major, a BS in Theatre and a Minor in Business. I soon found that working for others was boring and tedious so with some friends at the brokerage we worked for we split off and started our own firm called 21st Century, Inc. It was not creative enough and after a couple of nice jobs, I started a stamp and coin shop called The Penny Poste capitalizing on the volatility of the gold and silver markets and winning the Minuteman Award from the United Way for revamping their training programs. The business did very well but after a second divorce, it was sold and I moved to Florida in Feb. of 1981.
After a couple of false starts and with no one to answer to, I decided to pursue my creative side and reinvented myself as Unicorn Studios (See D&B) becoming a Freelance Scenic Designer and Artist. I had always been encouraged as an Actor and as an Artist but making a living at either was difficult in Florida. Everyone wanted an Artist or an Actor but no one seemed willing to pay. Talent Agents were Do-Nothing, No-Talents Agents scamming mothers, aspiring actors and wanna-bees alike with high priced photos. I did land a few paid gigs as an Actor but found I made bigger, better, faster money as an Artist specializing in theatre and decided that was the way to go after purchasing a house with my pretty “Lady Anne”. My artwork has appeared on everything from Album Covers to Billboards, from Operas to TV Commercials, from T-shirts to Posters and Books, etc. Much of what I did involved working with and teaching younger folks in theatre crafts at the Burt Reynolds Apprenticeship Program, PBCC or any theatre that had a children’s program such as the Lake Worth Playhouse or the JCC in WPB but the work was steady and I had made a reputation for myself as “the one who can be depended on to get the job done on time and on budget”! I did NOT solicit work as an Artist and seldom auditioned as an Actor!
At age 62 I retired on Social Security (Cash Flow), joined the VA (Health Care) and got a Reverse Mortgage (No House Payment)! Scaling down my artwork from Huge (60’ X 40’) to Book-size I have completed 2 books (THE MISADVENTURES OF FRIDA in collaboration with Derek Morell and THE UNEXPURGATED LOST TOBUL FAMILY ALBUM or HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN PSEUDO-ANCESTRY!) with 3 more books in the works. Although my last Stage Appearance in NIGHT WATCH garnered a Best Actor Nomination (Even though I stepped into the Lead Male Romantic Role 1 ½ weeks before opening!), I decided to change direction and extend my acting into doing more film projects and I seem to have found a niche in Indie Films but I want to expand, explore and move into the National Marketplaces. I am a Trained and Experienced Actor capable of creating interesting characters quickly by cutting through the crap thus saving time and money. I take direction well and often come into a project at the “Last Minute” because “I can still be depended on to get the job done on time and on budget”!
