Summary
The plot involves three troubled young women who have joined the Shakers to escape lives of hardship and abuse in the outside world. They have settled into a new world of sheet-folding, bean-snapping routine, where the only pleasures are hard work and song.
But when the girls start to neglect some of their chores, stern eldress Hannah (Priscilla Shanks) investigates. It turns out that the women are having visions of angels in the woods. One even draws pictures she says she has received from the spirit of Shaker founder Mother Ann. Hannah believes that these "gifts" from the beyond are nothing but hallucinations. Her reasoning is that no true angel would descend upon a righteous community without first visiting its leadersâwould it? The sightings threaten to unravel the communityâs entire clockwork structureânot to mention Hannahâs status.
A series of spiritual storms and collisions ensues, as each character reacts to the visions according to her precarious position within this hermetic society.
